We had the honor of speaking with Spyboy Horace of Creole Wild West, about the incredible Backstreet Cultural Museum and the rich traditions of the Mardi Gras Indian community in New Orleans.
The Backstreet Cultural Museum, located in the heart of Tremé, is dedicated to preserving the unique cultural heritage of New Orleans' African American community-based masking and processional traditions, including Mardi Gras Indians, jazz funerals, and social aid.
Founded by Sylvester Francis, the museum has been a cornerstone in documenting and celebrating these traditions. Spyboy Horace highlighted the importance of these cultural practices and their role in bringing the community together.
